Chapter 22 - Let There Be Life
I looked over at Tess. âWhat do you need to activate her?â
âWe need to hook up someone who has a copy of ANOP inside their body up to that terminal over there, and then we can only hope that we have enough power to kick start her.â The blue Ray shook her head in frustration. âWe are still working on trying to create a small enough fusion reactor for herâbut realistically, so are a dozen other companies. There seem to be some hard limits on how small we can make the containment field for a fusion reaction, and thatâs the only thing I can think of which could provide more than a temporary charge for her.â
âI should be the one connected to the terminal. ANOP has the highest level of integration with me.â
I just knew some objections would be coming about that suggestion. I was only surprised by the source.
It was Priska who said, âIâm not sure thatâs such a good idea. Thereâs only one Prism and the biological effects of this transfer are unknown. I donât know anything about AI or organic to computer interfaces, but I do know a fair bit about the biology of both supers and humans.â
âSomeone has to take the risk, I said.â
She nodded. âThis is true.â
For a moment I thought she was done arguing. She got bashful and seemed afraid to look me in the eyes. Then a switch went off in her and she stood up just a bit taller, locking eyes with me.
âRemind me who here has the ability to heal other supers?â Priska askedâno, she demanded. âIf youâre hurt, then weâll be stuck with traditional medical limitsâbut youâve broken those. At least thatâs the information Jill gave me.â
Dammit, she had a point. I glanced over at Molly; she was the only other one here who had ANOP inside her. âYou donât have to do this.â
She waved her hand like it was no big deal. âIâm down to try just about anything, once.â She grinned at me. âSomethings Iâll do more than once.â
âOkay but if you feel like itâs harming you in any way, then we pull the plug. Let me know right away.â
She nodded and let a couple of the techs lead her over to the terminal. I might have been worried, but there was an actual bounce in her step. She was actually excited to do this. She wasnât a huge risk taker, but something about this made her happy. I wondered for a moment if it was because of the bond, but it didnât feel like this. Maybe she really wanted to help ANOP.
Either way, I made a mental note to ask her about it later.
Tess said, âOkay, everyone else needs to clear the room. Donât worry, there will be a protective screen around Aqueous and the techs. If two normal humans can survive this, she wonât have any trouble.â
âAre you ready?â I asked ANOP.
âMore than you could ever know, Master Aden, despite the fact there is only a twenty-one percent probability that this will work.
