Chapter 22 - Let There Be Life

I looked over at Tess. “What do you need to activate her?”

“We need to hook up someone who has a copy of ANOP inside their body up to that terminal over there, and then we can only hope that we have enough power to kick start her.” The blue Ray shook her head in frustration. “We are still working on trying to create a small enough fusion reactor for her—but realistically, so are a dozen other companies. There seem to be some hard limits on how small we can make the containment field for a fusion reaction, and that’s the only thing I can think of which could provide more than a temporary charge for her.”

“I should be the one connected to the terminal. ANOP has the highest level of integration with me.”

I just knew some objections would be coming about that suggestion. I was only surprised by the source.

It was Priska who said, “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. There’s only one Prism and the biological effects of this transfer are unknown. I don’t know anything about AI or organic to computer interfaces, but I do know a fair bit about the biology of both supers and humans.”

“Someone has to take the risk, I said.”

She nodded. “This is true.”

For a moment I thought she was done arguing. She got bashful and seemed afraid to look me in the eyes. Then a switch went off in her and she stood up just a bit taller, locking eyes with me.

“Remind me who here has the ability to heal other supers?” Priska asked—no, she demanded. “If you’re hurt, then we’ll be stuck with traditional medical limits—but you’ve broken those. At least that’s the information Jill gave me.”

Dammit, she had a point. I glanced over at Molly; she was the only other one here who had ANOP inside her. “You don’t have to do this.”

She waved her hand like it was no big deal. “I’m down to try just about anything, once.” She grinned at me. “Somethings I’ll do more than once.”

“Okay but if you feel like it’s harming you in any way, then we pull the plug. Let me know right away.”

She nodded and let a couple of the techs lead her over to the terminal. I might have been worried, but there was an actual bounce in her step. She was actually excited to do this. She wasn’t a huge risk taker, but something about this made her happy. I wondered for a moment if it was because of the bond, but it didn’t feel like this. Maybe she really wanted to help ANOP.

Either way, I made a mental note to ask her about it later.

Tess said, “Okay, everyone else needs to clear the room. Don’t worry, there will be a protective screen around Aqueous and the techs. If two normal humans can survive this, she won’t have any trouble.”

“Are you ready?” I asked ANOP.

“More than you could ever know, Master Aden, despite the fact there is only a twenty-one percent probability that this will work.
